Derek Webster

How did Derek get into radio?

He co-wrote a comic book superhero called Captain Flash which was played on Radio Merseyside in 1978. It was recorded in his bedroom apparently!! His first professional broadcast was for Red Rose Radio on a Sunday night show, this led to more work, from traffic and travel broadcasts in the "eye in the sky" to interviewing the future Home Secretary Jack Straw.
Besides Red Rose Radio Derek has worked at Jazz FM and Century 105. He currently presents on 2BR and does a Thursday Night Jazz show for BBC Radio Cumbria.

Derek Webster is 2BR's early riser, presenting the breakfast show each weekday morning. He has spent most of his working life on radio in the north west on stations such as Red Rose, Jazz FM and Century. Derek, who lives with wife Jill just off the M65, says this part of Lancashire is dear to his heart. 'This has always been my favourite part of the county. I've got family in Nelson, and the people round here always seem happy to take part in what we do on the radio and have a laugh with us'. Time will tell whether Derek continues to laugh himself - the breakfast show has a 6 o'clock start, and that means early nights and a 4.30am alarm call. On Air: Monday 6:00:-10:00 Tuesday 6:00:-10:00 Wednesday 6:00:-10:00 Thursday 6:00:-10:00 Friday 6:00:-10:00 Saturday 10:00-2:00: Derek once ended up upside down on the M6 motorway after apparantly falling asleep at the wheel. He later appeared on THE TIME... THE PLACE to talk about the perils of too little sleep. Well Derek`s a lot older and wiser now. On April 24 1986 I was in Sharoe Green Hospital in Preston , where my first son John Alexander was just about to be born. I called Derek from the delivery suite and told him what was going on, He immediately opened his mike and said to Andrea (John`s mum) come on PUSH !!!!. I believe my son was the first to be born almost live on the radio. I was and still am a fan of Dereks , but I didn`t name my son after him, (you can take things too far you know !)
